Abstract

This chapter explores the foundational role of identity in spiritual development and personal wellbeing. It highlights how contemporary shifts in gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and age dynamics have reshaped traditional notions of identity and created both challenges and opportunities for spiritual fulfilment. The chapter examines identity not just as a psychological construct but also as a social and spiritual one, emphasizing how a person’s social location – class, ethnicity, religion, and other factors – shapes their worldview and sense of self. The influence of religion on identity is considered alongside non-religious spiritual expressions, including how loss of faith or shifting beliefs can affect self-conception. The chapter challenges essentialist views of identity and affirms its fluid and evolving nature. Practitioners are encouraged to reflect on their own identity as a pathway to better understanding and supporting the spiritual needs of those they work with.
