Abstract

Rather than offering a conclusive end, this epilogue reflects the ongoing and evolving nature of engaging with religion and spirituality in professional practice. The manual has aimed to reposition these themes from the margins to the mainstream of people work, arguing that they are central to understanding human experience and supporting others meaningfully. Central to the discussion is a practice-orientated definition of spirituality – what we do to give expression to our chosen worldview – which provides a practical framework for engaging with diverse beliefs and values without requiring specialized theological knowledge. This approach also bridges the unhelpful divide between religion and spirituality, emphasizing the need to evaluate their real-world impact on people’s behaviour, relationships and commitment to social justice. The chapter reinforces the need for a shared human perspective, rooted in anti-discriminatory practice and resilience building, and highlights the commonality between professionals and service users in navigating life through personal worldviews.
