Abstract

This chapter focuses on the spiritual dimension of purpose, examining how individuals define what their lives are for and the role of direction in shaping a meaningful existence. Purpose is presented as more than goal setting; it is portrayed as a dynamic, ongoing process that connects to one’s narrative and worldview. The chapter explores how life events – such as trauma, disillusionment or transition – can disrupt a person’s sense of purpose and affect their wellbeing. It also considers how age, social location and systemic barriers influence opportunities to establish or reclaim purpose. The text encourages practitioners to listen carefully to what motivates those they work with and to support them in recovering or redefining their sense of direction, especially during periods of change or adversity.
