Abstract

This chapter explores awe and wonder as spiritual experiences that can enrich life, promote healing and inspire a sense of meaning beyond the mundane. While traditionally associated with religion and the concept of the numinous, awe and wonder are presented here as accessible to all, regardless of faith. The chapter examines various sources – nature, art, music, ritual – and how they can evoke a sense of the sacred. It also addresses the unequal distribution of opportunities for such experiences due to social inequality and highlights the role of hope in overcoming spiritual deprivation. Practitioners are encouraged to recognize the therapeutic potential of awe and wonder, particularly in contexts of grief, oppression and mental health. The discussion includes how sensitivity to diverse understandings of what is sacred can enhance inclusive, spiritually sensitive practice.
