Abstract

This chapter critically examines Europe’s position as a global leader in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) regulation and sustainable finance. While the European Union has pioneered comprehensive frameworks, such as the EU Taxonomy, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, these innovations often mask underlying inefficiencies, including excessive complexity, regulatory fragmentation, and implementation disparities across member states. Drawing on policy analysis, financial sector feedback, and emerging empirical data, this chapter explores how Europe’s normative ambition in ESG governance can lead to both global standard-setting and unintended market burdens. It argues for a recalibrated approach that balances regulatory rigour with behavioural and operational feasibility.
