The Age of Authoritarianism and after
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the last 20 years of the Global Cold War in Latin America. This looks at President Nixon’s Action for Progress, which succeeded the Alliance for Progress, and the rise of military modernization theory in the 1960s. It also looks at the Peruvian Revolution (1968–1980) and the US crisis of hegemony in Central America in the 1980s. The last two sections are on the relative triumph of neoliberalism with the end of the Cold War and a triumph of democracy in the 1980s and 1990s.
