Abstract

The geopolitics of the Long Cold War and the Global Cold War increasingly framed the history of Latin America by the second half of the twentieth century. This Cold War history was the background to an examination of the significance and role of the state in relation to the geopolitics of development. A focus on the state illuminated the history and politics of the Long Cold War and the Global Cold War. During the Long Cold War and the Global Cold War, the state was central to the wider operation of politics at the national and international levels. In this context, the state was understood as an historical institution that provides a major arena for national politics: this was a politics that invariably included some groups and marginalized others along ideological or social and cultural lines.
