Abstract

This chapter focuses on the meaning-making processes of volunteers, or Nonresidents, of Back on My Feet. In volunteering through running, participants demonstrated what they referred to as a more dialogical form of volunteerism than simply “giving.” In the process, they fostered meaningful relationships and positive interactions that at times disrupted boundaries between the housed and unhoused. However, at the same time, they also reinforced moral statuses between receivers and givers, a central dilemma of the operations of charity, volunteerism, and philanthropy.
