Running While Temporarily Housed
Abstract
This chapter turns to the exploration of the meaning-making processes of those housed in a temporary recovery facility who participated in running with Back on My Feet. As participants ran with the organization, they engaged in practices of identity work while navigating homeless discourses. Making use of the practice of running, participants developed their sense of self in relation to physical and health practices, social interaction or distancing, belongingness, and support. As they made use of running, they did so within tensions brought about by discourses that construct “the homeless.”
