Abstract

Studying in the United States and other countries outside of one’s native country can be an exciting and valuable opportunity for students. Such opportunities can help students gain new experiences, as well as explore diverse cultures, which aids in establishment of global personal and professional connections. In addition to educational experience, studying in the United States allows international students to participate in global networks with people from various countries. Many international students enroll in universities across the United States in order to gain access to superior education, training, and better quality of life. While there are many benefits in studying abroad, students often face many socio-cultural and academic challenges, which impact their academic success and personal well-being. These include social isolation, racial, ethnic, and cultural differences, language barriers, differences in academic expectations, norms, and relationship building. This chapter discusses some of the challenges and offers strategies to improve international students’ experience and success in higher education. Through an extensive literature review, examination of international students’ enrollment databases and trends, and informal interviews with past and current international students enrolled in universities across the United States and Canada, this chapter provides insights for international education reform on a global scale.
