Abstract

International students arrive in the United States of America with little knowledge of the economic environment and how it may affect their livelihood and academic journeys. Studies have examined the economic significance of international students in college education and the challenges they face in funding their education and daily living. Financial education, basic financial knowledge, and competence in money management are becoming imperatives for consumers in all segments of society. This is vital for international students who are coming into an economy that may often differ remarkably from their home countries. This chapter introduces readers to the economic environment in the United States. It offers specific information designed to help international students to navigate the U.S. economic environment and tips on how to use what the environment offers. A section of this chapter covers the common educational funding plans in the United States and several financial support programs that are open to international students. This chapter ends with some best practices in financial and money management that international students should consider for enhancing their educational experience in the United States while planning for a smooth transition into postgraduate careers.
