Abstract

The United States has hosted over one million international students annually, offering rich educational and cultural opportunities. However, these students face complex legal challenges that affect their academic success and well-being. This chapter examines the contemporary legal landscape shaping international student experiences, focusing on immigration regulations, employment restrictions, discrimination, and access to legal support. Key topics include general legal issues, such as discrimination and due process, immigration legal issues and visa compliance, the impact of policy changes, and employment barriers such as optional practical training/curricular practical training limitations and workplace discrimination. Broader legal concerns—like access to rights, reporting grievances, and cultural-linguistic barriers—are also explored. This chapter concludes with recommendations for institutions and policymakers to improve legal support and promote equity for international students in U.S. higher education.
