Abstract

This chapter describes the contemporary context of Hone and Pindiga, a northeastern Nigerian village in which this language was once spoken. It presents insights into the destruction that came with the prospection and later extraction of oil, as well as the violence connected to colonial policies of divided rule in the early twentieth century. But also the language of linguistics and the ideas propagated by the academic discipline of Afrikanistik in the colonial and postcolonial era form part of the ruination. This is reflected on by referring to Lewis Gordon&s;s concept of disciplinary decadence. A reflection about the present situation of the discipline of Afrikanistik, or African linguistics, concludes this chapter.
