Abstract

Mirative language sets speakers free to consider what otherwise seems impossible – become a ghost, walk across the savannah, right back to where the ancestors once had come from. A story about how this will be done is an inversion of previous stories of how this was done. While the original story was about a journey that crisscrossed the African continent, the new one bases on a route suggested by artificial intelligence. While becoming a ghost and hovering above the earth seems possible, the road suggested by the digital device isn&s;t – it leads right into the territories of war and ruination. Verbs to express these movements in and out of those territories no longer describe real possibilities of movement but impossible ones, making it clear that they, like the ghosts, form part of something that is now lost.
