Abstract

This chapter’s title refers to the ‘afterlives’ of Bad Godesberg. We might equally have chosen to speak of its ‘presences’ even today.’ After all, the aim here is to show the contemporary significance of the 1959 programme and, at the same time, its status as one of the most important texts – arguably the most important text – of European social democracy in the latter half of the twentieth century.
