Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of recovery as a values-based approach to mental health and wellbeing. Challenging the limitations of the medical model, it promotes a more holistic and hopeful perspective that emphasizes personal strengths, support networks and resilience. The authors define recovery as a process of regaining control, dignity and purpose, not simply the absence of symptoms. They draw attention to the role of values in shaping how mental health challenges are understood and addressed and highlight the importance of believing in each individual’s capacity for growth and change. The chapter also links recovery to trauma-informed practice and the growing recognition of the long-term impact of adverse childhood experiences. It encourages practitioners across sectors to embrace recovery-oriented values as a foundation for empowering practice.
