Abstract

In this forward-looking chapter, the authors reflect on the evolving nature of values in contemporary society. They highlight how cultural, technological and economic shifts – including the rise of artificial intelligence and environmental crises – are reshaping ethical landscapes. Drawing on the work of scholars like Haidt, they examine the tension between individualistic and collectivist value systems and the implications for social cohesion and professional practice. Topics such as neoliberalism, spirituality, media influence and the wellbeing economy are explored as key arenas where values are contested and redefined. The chapter invites readers to remain engaged, thoughtful and adaptable as they navigate a complex world, stressing that values-based practice is not static but must evolve in step with societal changes.
