Abstract

This chapter introduces the fundamental importance of values in people work and emphasizes how values underpin every aspect of practice. It challenges the misconception that values are merely personal beliefs by demonstrating their pervasive influence in professional contexts. Through reflective exercises, the reader is encouraged to explore their own value base, recognize potential value conflicts and understand how self-awareness can prevent becoming part of the problem rather than the solution. The chapter sets the tone for the manual by establishing the idea that understanding and articulating one’s values is essential for ethical and effective practice. It concludes that personal and professional development hinges on a conscious commitment to values and that values-based practice begins with oneself.
