Abstract

This chapter broadens the scope from personal reflection to professional responsibility, exploring the complexities of the values debate in the context of human services and management. It highlights the ‘slippery’ nature of values and the difficulty of pinning them down yet insists that grappling with them is essential for effective practice. Key themes include the tension between personal values and professional ethics, the role of ‘political correctness’ and the importance of promoting equality and anti-discriminatory practice. The chapter also outlines what constitutes values-based practice and provides a framework for understanding how differing values can affect decision-making. By engaging with these theoretical underpinnings, readers are encouraged to connect abstract ideas with real-world practice, forming the foundation for the more practical chapters that follow.
