Abstract

Without worthy tourist gear on sale, Soviet tourists continued to rely mainly on handmade items. In the absence of legitimate channels, they crafted it mainly from materials acquired illegally. This handcraft gear was far superior in design and quality to that produced by Soviet industry; it was often comparable and sometimes even superior to that made by Western outdoor industries. Some of these designs were unique, unknown elsewhere.
