Abstract

The Great Purge launched by Stalin in the late 1930s eliminated the key members of the Soviet outdoor community, thus interrupting the steady development of adventure tourism. During World War II, the Red Army failed to benefit from having thousands of potential recruits for mountain divisions and partisan units, instead wasting this valuable manpower in the most inept way.
