Abstract

Following on from the demonstrated subversion of Japanese iconography in the Rising Sun cycle, this chapter begins by considering the cycle’s negative representations of Japanese people such as Anarchist From Colony ’s demonic politician whose thonged footwear evokes the racial slur jjokbari . Extending the definition of “Japanese” to include pro-Japanese Koreans known as chinilpa , this chapter’s second half addresses Korean characters considered to be permanently marked by their subjugation to Japan, such as the pornography-loving social climbers of The Handmaiden . Like Chapter 1 ’s Japanese icons and symbols, both jjokbari and chinilpa alike in these films are presented as visual targets for postcolonial “exorcism” to purge their “influence” from South Korea.
