Abstract

In this chapter we seek to elucidate the negative consequences of the 37th America’s Cup, staged in Barcelona in 2024, highlighting the work of protest movements. We first contextualize the regatta, considering key corporate and political interests, dominant narratives, the harmful impact of previous editions, notably in València, and citizen concerns. Then we delve into the political-economic ramifications of the 37th Cup and discuss its associated multi-level environmental damage, concluding with an analysis of the Plataforma No a la Copa América , the central hub around which a myriad of groups coalesced in protest. The research is based on a combination of primary and secondary sources with ethnographic observations. Particular attention is paid to the media.
