Armband Activism
Abstract
This chapter empirically documents and analyses fan reactions to a specific instance of attempted athlete activism, the OneLove armband controversy at Qatar 2022, offering insights into how supporters engage with and respond to political actions in sports. As global attention focused on Qatar’s contentious role as host, the OneLove armband emerged as a symbol of resistance against discrimination, specifically targeting the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. Initially supported by seven European nations as a gesture of solidarity and inclusiveness, the armband was later abandoned due to FIFA’s opposition and threats of sanction. Analysing approximately 19,000 Facebook comments, this chapter captures the relationship between collective endorsement and activism, highlighting how digital platforms amplify diverse perspectives. Through this discourse, the chapter not only reflects on the immediate reactions but also considers the broader implications of such global events as platforms for social change, advocacy, and the inherent challenges posed by conflicting international and local norms.
