Migration Reframed
Abstract
This chapter examines the radical shift in French migration policies during the ‘long 1970s,’ highlighting the transition from labour migration to a focus on settlement and integration. Drawing on socioeconomic and political contexts, it argues that the politicisation of migration governance in France reflects broader changes in European migration dynamics. The chapter analyses key events, such as the cessation of non-European immigration in 1974, the emergence of social rights for immigrant workers, and housing challenges. Using historical and policy analysis, it reveals how these developments shaped contemporary migration debates in France. Ultimately, the chapter contributes to understanding the interplay between national policies, economic factors, and international migration governance.
