Abstract

This chapter outlines the iconographic program of the composition by analysing each of the statuettes’ components from the bottom of the works to the uppermost elements. In combination, understanding these features enables us to interpret the iconography as an eschatological pathway to salvation. The study identifies canonical forms and exceptional variations in relation to other contemporary productions from Portuguese India, and innovatively describes main iconographic groups and two specific workshops. In conclusion, the chapter underlines some conceptual aspects that are particularly relevant for the overall understanding of the composition.
