Before the rockery
Abstract
Thanks to the Jesuit and Franciscan missions, the Flemish models previously analysed also reached the royal workshop of Kōṭṭe in Western Sri Lanka where they inspired the creation of rock crystal prototypes. Based on the comparative analysis of Sinhala royal commissions, royal chronicles, and Buddhist art, the chapter investigates the patronage and diffusion of these precious prototypes by converted members of the Sinhala aristocracy. Special attention is given here to the commixture of motifs with heraldic and religious meaning, and the specific symbolism of rock crystal in Buddhist reliquary art from Sri Lanka.
