Abstract

The introductory chapter studies Lav Diaz’s youth on the Philippine island of Mindanao, as the fertile soil out of which grew his cinema, in its relentless examination of the political, historical, and climatic cataclysms that have battered the archipelago. Another primordial memorial space that shaped Lav Diaz’s relation to nature and his concept of time is the jungle.
