Shooting Season of the Devil. A dialogue with Lav Diaz and Hazel Orencio
Abstract
Lav Diaz and actress Hazel Orencio recount the genesis of the film Season of the Devil , described as a “rock opera” by the filmmaker. Hazel Orencio analyses the difficulties encountered on the set in intoning the script’s lyrics musically, as well as the work she had to do to agree to play the character of the torturer lieutenant. Lav Diaz then analyses the scene of dictator Narcisso’s visit to the village, explaining how this Janusian character’s incomprehensible speech is made up of phrases from Hitler, Mussolini, Trump, and Duterte that have been rewritten backwards and memorised by the actor.
