About Bazin. A conversation between Lav Diaz and Hervé Joubert-Laurencin
Abstract
Hervé Joubert-Laurencin, editor and commentator of André Bazin’s Écrits complets (1918–1958), is invited to talk to Lav Diaz about the famous French film critic and thinker. Lav Diaz, whose relationship with Bazin is neither academic nor theoretical, but rather organic, says that he was influenced early on by Bazin’s words, which he got to know through the first English translation (produced in 1967 and 1971 and regularly republished). He is a witness to an emancipating Bazin, who sets us free (the statement “Cinema has not yet been invented” struck him for a long time to come) and clarifies, beyond any rules or dogmatism, his use of the long take, the reverse shot, the place of the observer, the cut, and the intensity of the shot.
