Callot on Stage
Abstract
This chapter explores the incongruous ways that nineteenth-century romanticized narratives place the seventeenth-century artist into two diverging categories: “Callot,” the great comic artist of fantasy and the grotesque, and “Jacques Callot,” a seventeenth-century bon vivant who lived through the Thirty Years’ War and boldly stood up to Louis XIII. These diverging portrayals can be seen in biographic, historic, poetic, and dramatic accounts of his life that romanticize Callot's “adventurous” voyage to Italy and patriotism in what I call the “noble refusal narrative.”
