A sport mega-event as a sustainable tourism development strategy
Abstract
Sheffield, England, invested £147 million in facilities used during the sport mega-event, the 1991 World Student Games. Consideration is given to the extent to which this investment promoted sustainable tourism and sustainable development more generally in the city. An analytical framework is used which is of general relevance for assessing event impacts. A range of impacts of the Sheffield Games are integrated within a sustainable development perspective, specific measures are related to three broad policy goals of sustainable development, and these are evaluated before, during and after the event.
