Medical social work in the hospital
Abstract
Until recently, hospitals provided the traditional setting for medical social workers and only a very small number worked elsewhere. This is understandable when one remembers that when medical social work first came into existence at the end of the last century, hospitals were almost the only social institutions concerned with the treatment of illness. Even in more recent years, for reasons which will be discussed more fully in the next chapter, opportunities for social work with the sick and the disabled in the wider community have been severely limited.
