Staging intervention in Japanese colonial Taiwan
Abstract
The topic of Chapter 1 is the genesis of Taiwan’s modern identity under Japanese colonial rule. The chapter examines the context in which the identity appeared and evolved. The focus of the first half is the colony’s cultural modernization: the overseas pilgrimages to Japan and China, the influx of new thought, the reprinted international works, and the first vernacular texts. The focus of the second half is the architecture of Japan’s colonial project and the totalistic discourses of Japan’s “Holy War” in Asia. The “collaborative” works illustrate the Japanese identity change or ontology of becoming Japanese.
