Abstract

Chapter 5 synthesizes the findings from the previous chapters, providing a comparative analysis of VEPs in the United States and China. It highlights the similarities and differences in the values, structures, and legal frameworks of VEPs across the two countries, considering the roles played by corporations, civil society, and government agencies. The chapter discusses the strengths and weaknesses of different organizational models, drawing lessons from both successes and failures. It also reflects on the broader implications for environmental governance, emphasizing the importance of integrating voluntary initiatives with formal regulatory mechanisms to achieve meaningful environmental outcomes. The chapter concludes with recommendations for policymakers, legislators, and practitioners, suggesting pathways for future development of VEPs that balance flexibility, innovation, and accountability.
