Abstract

This chapter examines the concept of event legacy and the different types of legacy outcomes and the structural challenges that frequently undermine their delivery. Mega events are often justified through promises of lasting benefits for host cities and communities. These anticipated long-term outcomes, known as event legacies, include physical infrastructure, economic development, social cohesion, environmental improvements and enhanced destination reputation. However, the gap between legacy promises and actual outcomes remains significant. Drawing on historical examples from major events such as the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, the chapter analyses why legacy plans succeed or fail. It highlights the importance of realistic planning, protected funding, stakeholder engagement and long-term evaluation. By identifying both the opportunities and limitations of legacy planning, the chapter provides practical frameworks for designing more sustainable and accountable event legacies.
