Abstract

This chapter examines the environmental impacts associated with planned events and explains why managing these impacts is central to sustainable event practice. It defines what is meant by the environment and environmental impacts, and explores how events can generate both negative effects, such as pollution, waste, congestion and ecosystem degradation, and positive outcomes, including conservation initiatives, urban renewal and increased environmental awareness. The chapter also considers how impacts vary according to the type, scale, location and timing of events. Particular attention is given to the geographical and temporal scales at which impacts occur, from immediate site-level effects to broader regional and global consequences. The chapter further discusses the challenges involved in measuring environmental impacts and critiques common approaches to environmental impact management. Through examples and case material, it highlights the importance of effective environmental planning and management in maintaining event quality, stakeholder support and long-term environmental sustainability.
