Abstract

This chapter introduces the Madonna–whore–hologram as a clinical structure reframing erotic dissociation not as pathology but as an aesthetic of affective survival . Drawing from object relations theory , dissociation literature, and post-structural ethics, it examines analytic work—often with queer male patients—where desire is refracted across incompatible identifications: too pure to touch, too knowing to approach, too present to tolerate. In such fields, shame , secrecy , and stylization shape an atmosphere in which erotic life flickers between presence and absence. The analyst occupies a double position , both real and misrecognized, drawn into an unstable choreography without collapsing its protective structure. Through detailed clinical vignettes , the chapter explores how reverie , embodied presence , and ethical restraint can sustain the “shimmer” without forcing integration. The hologram becomes a threshold where contact can be risked in partial, flickering forms, offering not resolution but resonance —a way of being with erotic opacity until it becomes more livable.
