Abstract

Emptiness is not a single wound. It has textures, climates, and moods. Some emptiness feels sharp—like absence that still bleeds. Some is soft and echoing, like a room no one ever entered. There is the hollowness of what was never named, the silence left by what once spoke, and the stillness that arises not from loss but from presence too vast to be contained. In the analytic encounter, we do not always fill these voids. We often sit beside them, adjusting the psychic air so they may be held.
