Abstract

This chapter repositions the symptom not as a message to be deciphered but as a gravitational trace—an orbit around what remains structurally unrepresentable. Rather than approaching the symptom through hermeneutic mastery or reductive meaning, this chapter offers a curved epistemology in which the symptom is a recursive event: an expressive residue of proximity to the unsymbolizable. Drawing on Freud, Laplanche, and Loewald, as well as metaphors from physics, the symptom is framed as a site of symbolic gravity, where psychic experience warps language, time, and space. Clinical work becomes a matter of learning to dwell in the orbit of the symptom—feeling its pull without collapsing it into interpretation. The analyst is recast not as decoder, but as one who moves with the patient through recursive passes around a missing center. This chapter proposes that symptom relief sometimes arrives not through explanation, but through the restoration of symbolic atmosphere.
