Abstract

This chapter describes the everyday lives of youth prisoners in the Indian state of Assam. Indian prisons are overcrowded with youth prisoners (irrespective of gender) aged 18–30 years, and they face severe issues in coping with the restricted prison life. It has a significant impact on their life and health. Using semi-structured interviews with 18 youth prisoners, this study explores the challenges they face in prison. It also highlights why social work intervention is necessary for the well-being of prisoners and how it can be operationalised in Indian prisons.
