Abstract

This chapter situates outer space as a flagship of African union Agenda 2063. It highlights the vision, principles, and aspirations that define Agenda 2063, tracking the flagship projects and the multi-level implementation design across the African Union Commission, AUDA-NEPAD, Regional Economic Communities and Member States. It then places the African Outer Space Programme as a flagship of this Agenda by recalling the mandate of the Space Working Group and the Adoption of the African Space Policy and Strategy and explains who the AfSA intended to translate developmental priorities into space applications. The discussion then provides the intersection with specific aspirations and flagships including digital connectivity, agriculture and food security, climate resilience, infrastructure, border management, and maritime awareness. Finally, the chapter identifies the challenges of prospects for space under Agenda 2063 such as coordination gaps, financing constraints, uneven integration of space capabilities into sector programmes, and the need for cross-sector planning so that space services are specified at the design stage rather than retrofitted.
