Critical thinking
Abstract
Develop students’ critical thinking and argument analysis skills using AI tools designed for the English classroom. This chapter provides practical strategies for teaching students to identify bias, evaluate arguments, and analyse persuasive techniques in non-fiction texts. Key activities include the Focus Group Generator for exploring diverse viewpoints, Logical Fallacy exercises for spotting weak reasoning, and the Ideological Turing Test for developing analytical writing. This work is essential for GCSE English Language Paper 2, A-level Language and Literature, and preparing students for university-level essay writing. The chapter reframes the debate from fearing cognitive offloading to harnessing AI for deeper analysis, using Large Language Models to explore, break down, and evaluate arguments. Additional methods include Socratic Dialogues to expose students to diverse, authentic viewpoints, the Logical Fallacy Theatre to train students in identifying and fixing flaws in reasoning, and the Counterfactuals Generator to foster intellectual humility, challenge assumptions, and strengthen students’ metacognitive skills for a world saturated with AI-generated information.
