Abstract

Kerala of today includes the old Travancore and Cochin States and Malabar of the mediaeval past. Lying in the Southwest section of Peninsular India, it has a coastline of over 700 kms. stretching from Vilinjam in the south to Kasargol in the north. Definite references take the maritime port trade of the region to the middle of first millennium before Christ, though archaeological finds in Egypt and the Mesopotamian Valley indicate even earlier trade relations with the coast of Malabar, as the coast was referred to in early times. Recent excavations at Pattinam (2005-2009) throws light on Muziris and Roman trade with Malabar.
