Abstract

Andaman and Nicobar island groups lie in the Bay of Bengal, on its eastern side, closer to the shores of Myanmar and Malaysia, separated from them by the Andaman Sea. Both the island groups form part of Indian territory. They extend north to south as the unsubmerged hill tops of the ranges which run along the west coast of Myanmar through the two island groups into the north end of Sumatra, a part of Indonesia. The Andaman islands extend between 10° 20’ N and 14° 15’ N. The Nicobar Islands stretch between 6° 30’ N and 9° 15’ N. The two island groups are separated by the Ten Degrees Channel, a navigable passage.
