Abstract

There is much evidence in Indian classical literature in several languages of the Indian boat. Almost all of this written knowledge is about the variety of boats by their nomenclature and local names by which boat components are known on different sections of the Indian coasts. Till the mediaeval period, there is little reference to the technical aspects of the boat forms. Till early sixteenth century, not much was known about boat designs and their constructional details.
