Abstract

The primitive building of a boat, made of planks must have had its origins when the sea-faring man developed the notion of adding side cover to his log (free - board). When this happened in history is difficult to know. The construction of reed boat perhaps is an indicator of the plank built boat as a natural evolution over time. It happens to have evolved even in prehistoric times, and different forms of rafts have continued to survive even after the plank built boat started evolving progressively. Over centuries, the plank built boat grew in size as well as its nuances as it developed a rounded form.
