Abstract

Human beings are pre-programmed to act ethically in the genetic code, and this programming seems to carry forward to the workplace. We are ethical creatures, and acting in a fashion to promote ethics, integrity, and compassion is a human trait. We find that in the work environment, we seek behavior that dwells on ethical conduct, and out of this satisfaction comes a distinct pleasure of contribution to society. Perhaps it is the enhancement of this conduct that binds us to a higher power. We should abandon in the corporate environment the singular focus on ROE, ROA, and just other plain financial measures that may limit our freedom of action to indulge in compassion. We already know more and more corporations are managed for shareholders and stakeholders, so we need to develop measures of performance that reach beyond financial measures and, at some point, decide which group has priority. It is an aspiration to reform corporate performance beyond financial measures and examine the feasibility of return on employee, return on environment, and return on generosity of spirit to enclose the human aspiration in a measure all-encompassing. This chapter will examine how individual ethics mature into corporate integrity and how the human spirit copes with the whole global measure of attainment and the attendant limitations. And furthermore, how corporate measures of accomplishment, beyond financial measures, can instill a higher level of human achievement. We are on the cusp of looking beyond stakeholder results to the welfare of society. There is definite programming in the genetic code, and full satisfaction can only be derived when personal and corporate behavior align in a fashion to reinforce the individual&s;s sense of accomplishment.
