Abstract
The phrase “a healthy adult” does not conjure up a clear picture. We feel inclined to ask, “healthy in what ways?” A person with everything can still feel suicidal, and a person with nothing can still laugh and smile. A person in chronic pain can still feel alive, and a person in perfect health can feel dull and apathetic. Is there any one thing we are trying to suggest when we say, “Look, there’s a healthy adult!”?
