Bahrain and Syria
Abstract
The previous chapters analyzed the cases of Bahrain and Syria—the causes behind the uprisings and their dynamics and trajectories—in an effort to explain why peaceful protests led to sect-identity-based violence rather than democratic reform. This chapter compares the findings of both cases in order to understand their similar outcomes: regime resilience and failed democratization. It also seeks to explain why Syria&s;s partial state failure was not replicated in Bahrain.
